Tait Orca 5000 Series Intrinsically Safe Portable Radios
Tait Orca 5000 Series Intrinsically Safe portables offer reliable radio communications in almost any hazardous environment. Both trunked and conventional Tait Orca 5000 series portable radios can be supplied with Intrinsically Safe features.
Manufactured to comply with Factory Mutual (FM) United States* approvals, the Tait Orca 5000 is classed Intrinsically Safe (IS) and Non-Incendive (NI). These approvals allow the Tait Orca 5000 to be operated around flammable gases and vapours, typically found in petrochemical and other hazardous environments.
Hazardous environments are classified according to industry type, level of risk, atmospheric conditions and temperature. You can choose either IS or NI radios depending on the environment where the radios will be used.
The Tait Orca 5000 series meets the following Intrinsically Safe (IS) ratings required for equipment to be used in Division 1 environments:
IS Class I, Division 1, Groups C, D T3C
| IS: | Intrinsically Safe |
| Class I: | Gas/Petroleum Environment |
| Division 1: | Flammable material present continuously |
| Groups C, D: | Gas/vapours of ethylene and propane |
| T3C: | Temperature rating 160°C |
The Tait Orca 5000 series meets the following Non-Incendive (NI) ratings required for equipment to be used in Division 2 environments:
NI Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, D T3C
| NI: | Non-Incendive |
| Class I: | Gas/Petroleum Environment |
| Division 1: | Flammable material present abnormally or intermittently |
| Groups A, B, C, D: | Gas/vapours of acetylene, hydrogen, ethylene and propane |
| T3C: | Temperature rating 160°C |
Temperature Rating
Temperature rating is probably the most important factor for IS portables. The rating is a maximum temperature (°C) and has an associated identification code.
Portable radios cannot be used in environments where any hazardous mixture explodes or combusts at less than the stated maximum temperature.
Radios must meet this temperature requirement to be fully IS compliant. If the radios meet all other IS ratings but fail to meet the temperature requirement, they cannot be rated IS compliant.
* Factory Mutual (FM) Approval means these radios are certified for use in hazardous environments in the United States. In other countries, ensure your use of the Tait IS portable in your work environment does not breach your local regulations.
