Intrinsically Safe and Encrypted Products from Tait
Date : December 15, 2002
Tait has two exciting new products - Encrypted terminals for greater security and Intrinsically Safe portables for use in hazardous environments.
There is an old saying in the mobile radio industry that even during an economic downturn two customers still need new radios: the people who maintain the law and the people who pump oil out of the ground.
Tait Encryption
For organisations that value the confidentiality of their information, Tait can now offer Tait Orca portable and T2000 mobile radios fitted with Midian or Transcrypt encryption modules.
Some modules offer cost-effective voice inversion encryption to protect against casual listeners while others offer different levels of rolling code encryption to protect against a more determined listener.
"There's a misconception that encryption is really just for emergency services and security organisations," according to Portable Product Manager, Martin Ball. "But increasingly a wider array of organisations like commercial businesses and event managers are recognising the value of their information and choosing encryption.
"For example we are working with sports teams to ensure their communications are protected from their competitors."
As well as being factory fitted, the encryption units can be installed into any original Tait Orca or Tait Orca 5000 portables or T2000 Series II mobiles.
Tait features include clear audible and/or visual confirmation that the signal is encrypted, the ability to program some encryption modules over the air, and a simple user interface that enables the code to be changed.

Intrinsically Safe (IS) Portables
The Tait Orca 5000 range of trunked and conventional portables now includes IS products for use in hazardous environments.
Manufactured to comply with internationally recognised Factory Mutual (FM) Approvals, the Tait Orca is classed IS and NI (non-incendive). This means it can be used around flammable gases and vapours, such as those found in petrochemical environments.
"Until now our only IS portable was the T3000 model," says Martin Ball. "But now customers have the assurance of IS operation in our superior Tait Orca 5000 range."
Like the rest of the Tait Orca series, the IS model is built to IP54 dust and water resistance standards, and is designed for the harshest of environments. A full range of FM approved accessories is also available, including rugged speaker-mics and noise cancelling headsets.
