Tait Encryption - as used by Team New Zealand during the 2003 America's Cup
Date : December 9, 2002
Tait Electronics played an important part in Team New Zealand's most recent America's Cup campaign.
Tait supplied Team New Zealand with 20 encrypted Tait Orca 5000 and T2000 radios for use onboard their two yachts NZL-81 and NZL-82 and support vessels during the most recent regatta, which was held in Auckland.
The Tait encrypted radios prevented any unauthorised listeners from eavesdropping on Team NZ communications during racing - a feature that is now available on all Tait Orca 5000 portables and T2000 mobiles.
In 2000 the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron became the first non-US yacht club to successfully defend the America's Cup - sport's oldest international trophy - since its inception in 1851.
The America's Cup attracted a huge global audience and with the increased number of European syndicates involved in the 2003 series, media coverage and global interest soared.
The relationship with Team New Zealand was managed closely by TCL dealer Skycom (Tait Mobile Radio Auckland), the same dealer which provided the Tait communication solution to Television New Zealand for the 2000 America's Cup.
Official Supplier status is only awarded to those companies who provide Team New Zealand with a product or solution that directly supports their campaign.
"Tait were proud to be able to assist Team New Zealand in their defence campaign, and delighted that the Tait Encryption solution played an important part in the Americas Cup 2003, an event whichcontributed over $600 million to the New Zealand economy," says Skycom's Managing Director John Sullivan.
