World Cup Skiing - Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy

The Customer

Held at Cortina d'Ampezzo, one of the most famous and beautiful ski locations in Italy, this three day Women's Alpine Skiing competition was one of the most anticipated of the pre-Olympic World Cup Series. The Women's Skiing World Cup is spread over the northern winter months and takes place in various locations throughout Europe and North America. The organising committee was looking for a fully featured radio system to help their communications on the slopes.

The Challenge

Jescom, Tait's representative dealer in Italy, provided a four channel TN1100 MPT 1327 solution in order to provide fast and reliable communications to the staff involved in the organisation of the event.

These included emergency and medical staff, timekeepers, judges, maintenance personnel and the snow-plough crews. To make carrying the radios easier whilst on the slopes, Jescom also supplied some customised chest carrying cases suitable for Tait portables.

The Solution

With many different teams on the ski slopes, the World Cup committee settled on the Tait system for its flexible group and individual calling, priority calls for emergencies and its ability to interface with the telephone network at the site.

During the competition the judges and timekeepers needed to give their OK for the next contestant to start and then communicate to the various teams the official time made by each competitor. The Tait system was found to be ideal for this purpose.

The proven reliability and robustness of the portables in demanding situations such as low temperatures and mountainous terrain was especially important. The long battery life of the Tait portable was also vital with staff starting work on the mountain very early and ending late at night.
