Transurban upgrade communications with Tait base stations and portable radios

With over 100,000 cars a day using the Sydney Hills M2 Motorway, critical communications along the entire twenty-one kilometre length of road was paramount. Radio plays an important role in the management of these operations by allowing personnel within the organisation, from the control room, breakdown crews and support staff to communicate effectively.
Operator Transurban Group is an international toll road developer that specialises in traffic modelling, open road tolling and stakeholder engagement, and has a market capitalisation of more than A$7billion.
Transurban needed to upgrade their radio network for a number of reasons including improved coverage through extremely difficult terrain, system redundancy and critical communications during emergencies. Importantly the system also had to provide an effective platform for the future of Sydney Motorways.
“Tait equipment was chosen because of its superior quality and especially for its future expansion capabilities. Combining this with Mastercom’s detailed understanding of the customer's requirements, the choice was simple. The new wide area network has improved radio coverage and emergency communications.”

Sales Manager, Mastercom
Tait dealer Mastercom was able to engineer a three site IP connected analogue system using Tait TB7100 base stations, which fully addressed the needs of the customers current and future requirements. One of the sites was designed with complete portable and mobile radio coverage inside a motorway tunnel where previously only cellular coverage was available.
Transurban has invested heavily in an extensive fibre network along the motorway and this was utilised to link the sites together using third party “Radio over IP’ technology in conjunction with the TB7100 base stations. Mobile and portable voting has also been implemented to maximise voice clarity (the TP8100 and TM8000 products have voting, a system of selecting the best signal from a number of channels, as standard). When a call is made, the mobile and portable transmit to the best site and the system instantly retransmits the voice traffic across the whole network.
The resulting Tait network repeats along the entire motorway, providing seamless operation.
