A novel Lone Worker facility is one of a range of new enhancements Tait Electronics has added to the TaitNet TN1100 single-site trunked radio system.

Lone Worker improves the safety of staff working on their own in hazardous environments. At predetermined times they must respond to audio tones from their radio to confirm their safety. If they fail to respond the radio will ring continuously, and if there is still no response an emergency call is sent to all radios.

While most Lone Worker features are activated by a timer in the user's radio, the TN1100 facility is managed by the infrastructure.

"This is an important difference," says TaitNet Product Manager, John Billows. "There are many instances where an alarm is more likely to be activated by an infrastructure-based Lone Worker facility."

"With this centralised approach, if the radio is damaged in a fall, submerged in water, or a person is hijacked and taken out of the coverage area, then the system is aware and an alarm will be raised. Timer based systems located with the worker's radio would not raise an alarm in these scenarios."

The TN1100 system maintains a timer for each protected radio. At predetermined times, the system sends a signal to each radio to activate the audio tone. If there is no response for any reason, a second signal is sent to make the radio ring continuously, before finally, the alarm will be raised.

Mr Billows says the infrastructure-based solution has been developed in response to requests from customers who have significant security requirements.
